Performance monitoring is a key component to a glycol solar hot water system, because the system owner and installer can remotely view the operation of the system from anywhere there is an Internet connection. TFS regularly assesses your hot water system to be certain that it continues to operate at peak performance.
Performance monitoring clearly conveys how well your solar hot water system is working by displaying the amount of hot water it is producing, as well as the temperature of the collector and the water in the storage tank, throughout the day. In real time, data monitoring records, stores, and presents your system’s daily, monthly, and annual performance using easy to understand diagrams and graphs.
Assure Optimal Performance
The Heliodyne performance monitoring allows the system production to be monitored by the customer or the installer. One of the most valuable features of data monitoring is the ability to detect problems with the system operation. The system can be programmed to send an e-mail notification to the installer and customer if parameters are out of range, and if TFS detects a problem, we can immediately take action to reduce any system down time.
Performance monitoring mitigates some of the common issues with glycol systems, such as stagnation. Stagnation occurs when the water in the storage tank reaches the tank’s maximum set temperature (typically 140-160 degrees Fahrenheit), resulting in the system going into “stand-by.” The system then stops circulating the glycol, a food-grade biodegradable heat exchange fluid. Sitting stagnant on the roof, glycol degrades in temperatures exceeding 300 degrees. This can be prevented or minimized by operating the controller in vacation mode, which runs the system at night. This brings the tank temperature of the water down to 120 degrees, thus starting it from a cooler temperature and allowing the hot water to be replenished over the course of the day without overheating the glycol.
Performance monitoring allows both the customer and the installer to see the system overheating and to remotely activate vacation mode. This can significantly extend the life of your glycol, reduce the amount of service calls and maintenance, and ensure optimum system performance.
Easy Solar Savings
Performance monitoring allows you to easily understand the operation of your system with user-friendly charts and graphs, which show long- and short-term trends in collector performance and usage patterns. You can use performance monitoring to further reduce your monthly electric or gas bills by assessing your company’s hot water use and changing usage patterns.
T1 represents the collector temperature, while T2 represents the temperature of the water in the bottom of the storage tank.
