SUMMARY:Watershed Management Group Driveway Rip
DESCRIPTION:Join Watershed Management Group Co-op for a free educational Water Harvesting Workshop. We will transform a driveway into a water harvesting oasis with native plants. We will create earthworks to supplement existing water harvesting features which includes a 2\,200 gallon cistern\, and a kitchen resource drain system installed by Watershed Management Group in 2011. In addition the homeowner and his sons have installed 300‘ of terraces on 7 levels to slow down and capture water causing an erosion problem on steep slopes behind the house. This residence was featured Watershed Management Group's 2011 home tour\, so if you missed that\, here is a second chance to see one of the most inspiring sites featured. Workshop leader and registered landscape architect James DeRoussel will lead a discussion on different types of water harvesting features and how they relate to each other to create a truly integrated system. The home owner would also be happy to give a guided tour of his solar photo voltaic system and real‐time consumption monitoring. So come along enjoy a Memorial day weekend workout and see how easy and effective it is to be green. Organizer Website: http://watershedmg.org/civicrm/event/info?id=146&reset=1

SUMMARY:"Inside the Overpass" Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the grand opening of “Inside The Overpass\," a work of art presented to the City of Tucson by the children of the Jim and Vicki Click Boys & Girls Club and Tucson Arts Brigade. The event will feature speakers\, including Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild\, plus special guests\, live music\, food\, & original art from the PLACE program. It will take place Wednesday\, May 9th from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The program officially begins at 4 pm in the Gymnasium at the Jim and Vicki Boys & Girls Club\, 29th St. & Columbus Blvd. TURNING TAGGERS INTO STEWARDS This mural project represents two years of hard work by youth ages 8-18 at the Jim & Vicki Click Boys & Girls Club\, which is adjacent to the overpass mural. With the help of Tucson Arts Brigade's Executive Director and Teaching Artist\, Michael B. Schwartz\, assistants Linda Kerr\, Samantha Novak\, Molly Moore\, and Kathleen Murphy\, the youth designed\, created\, and installed the works of art. This site was chosen because the overpass was a favorite target for graffiti taggers of all ages. After cleaning hundreds of tags and over 80 pounds of trash and debris\, the artwork was installed with the intention of preventing graffiti\, beautifying the neighborhood\, and helping to restore a sense of pride to the area. The participants not only learned important lessons about art\, but they gained positive tools for personal expression\, community cooperation\, and formal permission for public projects. “The youth in this area have proven that they will become successful leaders\, business owners and caretakers of this place. They have produced an amazing body of artwork that will be enjoyed by our community for years to come. Creating a beautiful community has become a priority for youth in our program.” ~ Michael B. Schwartz

SUMMARY:Extending the Growing Season and Adapting to Global Warming
DESCRIPTION:Avalon Organic Gardens is offering a workshop entitled "Extending the Growing Season and Adapting to Global Warming" on Saturday\, May 19th from 9am-4pm. This workshop will provide participants with a step-by-step theoretical—and hands-on practical—"how-to" approach to the utilization of greenhouses as a component of sustainable living. In exploring innovative and proven techniques in growing food all year around\, relative to your unique circumstances\, you will find that greenhouses can be effective with a minimal investment. You will learn about different styles of greenhouses/ high-tunnels/ hoop-houses/ shade structures\, and how to build micro-climates for various plants with various irrigation techniques. Tarenta Baldeschi and his staff teach at Avalon Organic Gardens & EcoVillage in Tumacacori\, Arizona. They will share with you how\, in 2007\, Avalon Gardens began transforming established Bermuda grass pastures\, acre by acre\, into a thriving food producing garden. Learn the basic steps with them\, and from their experience\, discover what you need to do to apply these unique techniques in gardening. Focus on the need to adjust and adapt to climate changes and extreme temperatures in the Sonoran desert—from 120 degrees down to 0 (zero) degrees. Because of Global Warming\, this climate zone currently experiences severe drought during the monsoon seasons\, micro-bursts and wind gusts up to 80 miles an hour\, and frosts that occur later in the spring and earlier in the fall. Learning to adapt to the current trend of Global Warming will be an integral part of this workshop. Subjects include: Understanding how unheated greenhouses/ high-tunnels/ hoop-houses function for propagation and planting Enriching the soil with various composting materials and Effective Micro-organism (EM) brewing and application to stop erosion and increase moisture retention Using shade structures for cooling and heating Applying rainwater harvesting and storage to keep temperatures moderate Converting flood irrigation to drip irrigation in order to better regulate the temperatures of soil and roots during various seasons Using floating row-covers\, perforated clear plastic\, and biodegradable plastic mulch Spacing choices and inter-planting of various food growing plants Planning and applying wind breaks and shade with fruit and nut trees\, and using flowering perennials to attract beneficial insects and pollinators The workshop is six hours\, plus time for lunch. Workshop fee is $200 per person and includes an organic lunch. Financial contribution is required; work trade or material barter will be considered. Please make reservations one week in advance. A minimum of 6 participants is required to hold workshop\, otherwise subject to cancellation. Larger groups\, organizations\, schools please call for further information about group rates. Some printed material will be distributed\, explaining basic steps\, references to materials\, books\, etc. Please no recording with camera\, phone\, or video unless pre-approved by written request stating purpose in advance. This exact workshop cannot be done elsewhere. A specific project/workshop\, (for example assembling or building greenhouses/ high-tunnels/ hoop-houses/ shade structures/ drip irrigation\, etc.) can be done elsewhere. Call for details. An initial on-site consultation is necessary to plan and prepare a workshop elsewhere. On-site consultation is available for an hourly fee of $75 per person (a team of two will always consult together) plus traveling expenses This fee includes the following: A site evaluation A Q&A session with the client to assess project needs A final written evaluation and recommendation\, with estimated material costs and hours of labor neededAny drawings\, vision plans\, pictures\, elevation maps\, plot plans\, landscape designs that are available\, and any other material requested by consultant\, might be required in advance in order to prepare for an off-site visit. SUMMARY:Power to Prepare Summit and Earth Hour Event
DESCRIPTION:Attend the Power To Prepare Summit and Earth Hour Event on March 31st! What does the Tucson community think about our climate vulnerability and how we might begin to address it? Find out why Tucson is very vulnerable to climate change and how we are leading the nation in community climate adaptation planning. Join us for a premier community event as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) kicks off their new Climate Challenge program in our city! We invite you to come prepared to share your ideas and concerns\, supported by AmericaSpeaks 21st Century Town Meeting method that integrates small group discussion with interactive technologies. WWF\, in collaboration with AmericaSpeaks and the City of Tucson\, will host 2 free events on March 31st: an important community forum and an Earth Hour celebration reception. If you are not sure about whether climate risks are real\, this is an opportunity to express your thoughts and discuss the issues. The community forum will take place at the Tucson Convention Center from 3:00 - 7:15. Space is limited. Please register early at: http://cms3.tucsonaz.gov/ocsd/news/3312012-power-prepare-tucson-summit. The forum is free and a light dinner will be provided. The community forum will: ● Let all share in discussion about our climate vulnerability. ● Highlight Tucson’s climate adaptation leadership to other cities in order to encourage them to take action. ● Get feedback from you about climate vulnerability concerns. Tucson was chosen over other cities that are engaged in climate adaptation planning\, such as New York City\, Chicago\, Seattle\, and Miami\, to help demonstrate that every city\, not just the largest\, needs to consider and can address its vulnerability to climate change. Earth Hour Celebration! Following the event\, join us for a reception celebrating the actual Earth Hour event from 8-9:30 PM in the Presidio Plaza outside City Hall. This event is free and open to the public. Enjoy light refreshments and conversation as we watch the lights go out in City Hall and surrounding buildings to honor Earth Hour.

SUMMARY:PV and Optic Informational Talk at the University of Arizona
DESCRIPTION:As a part of their UA REN Seminar Series\, Ray Kostuk\, a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona will be delivering a speach detailing the future of solar from an engineering background. The talk with include the current cost projections for photovoltaic energy systems which indicate that cost parity with coal and oil will be difficult to achieve even by 2050. This implies that improvements must be accelerated to meet the energy challenge confronting us. The PV conversion process is inherently optical in nature. Co-design of optics in conjunction with the PV process can potentially provide the necessary acceleration to this energy source. In this talk a number of important contributions to optics for PV are examined and placed in context of the challenges of making cost effective renewable energy. Location: Marshall Building\, 845 N Park Ave Room 531. Brown bag lunches encouraged.

The issue of renewable energy is an important one in Arizona: The ability of the state to sustain a comfortable quality of life and improve economic opportunities for its residents depends on the decisions we make about how we will manage energy in the future\, says Ardeth Barnhart\, program director for the University of Arizona Renewable Energy Network\, UAREN. Renewable energy and energy efficiency will play a much bigger role than people anticipate because of rapid advances in technology and adoption of these sources into regional and global energy plans. The talk is co-sponsored by UAREN; Tucson-based Research Corporation for Science Advancement (RCSA)\, the nation's oldest foundation devoted wholly to science; and the National Science Foundation.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Bee Keeping
DESCRIPTION:On October 15th\, join the Sonoran Permaculture Guild for a workshop to learn the basics of what is involved in keeping bees. This is a one day introductory beekeeping workshop in Avra Valley just west of Tucson\, Arizona. The role of bees in a regenerative permaculture design will be discussed and compared to conventional “industrial” methods of hive maintenance. We will look at the biology of the honey bee\, the structure of the hive\, the roles of queen\, worker and drone\, and the honey bee’s complex set of duties such as completing pollination\, storing nectar and pollen\, making wax\, and expanding the hive with brood. To facilitate discussion\, the morning portion of this class will involve the examination of these patterns within a working top bar hive. The second half of this class will illustrate the construction of a top bar hive\, and the benefits of natural top bar beekeeping vs. standard beekeeping methods. The cost and planning involved in setting up a top bar bee hive and a conventional Langstroth hive is covered\, as well as alternative hive designs and installing a new hive from packages or swarms. If time\, weather\, and honey flow permit\, a hive will be harvested and comb honey may be available for tasting. Suggested reading: The Buzz about Bees\, Biology of a Superorganism\, by Jurgen Tautz\, The Biology of the Honeybee\, by Mark L. Winston\, and Introduction to Permaculture\,by Bill Mollison. Location: ReZoNation Farms & Consulting\, Avra Valley\, Arizona\, 27 miles west of downtown Tucson. Directions and class details will be sent with registration. Carpooling is encouraged. Time: 8AM to 3:30PM Cost: $75 – includes all course materials. The workshop is taught by Jaime de Zubeldia. Contact Jaime at jdezubel@yahoo.com or 869-1044 for information or to sign up for the Bee Keeping class. SUMMARY:The 17th Annual Tucson Permaculture Design Course
DESCRIPTION:This course is one of the longest running annual Permaculture Design courses in the U.S. and leads to a Permaculture design certificate. It covers all aspects of sustainable design with an emphasis on Southwest dry lands\, including a balance of hands on experience\, classroom time\, and design practicum. Dynamic exercises encourage pattern recognition\, noticing the links between plants and animals\, climate\, and landforms that make up natural ecosystems. These patterns are the basis for the Permaculture system of sustainable design. The course focuses on dry land communities with a strong urban and semi-rural emphasis\, addressing individual site and neighborhood “problems” such as storm water flooding. Students learn to read the landscape\, to map and analyze energies flowing through a site\, and to develop integrated designs for sustainable systems. The weekend format of the course makes it easier for people who hold a week day job to attend and promotes better integration of the course material into daily life. Course topics include agro forestry\, appropriate technology\, building design\, design principles and patterning\, site analysis\, drylands gardening principles\, ecosystem restoration\, philosophy and ethics of Permaculture\, regenerative community economics\, soils and erosion control\, village and community design\, water harvesting\, and many other topics. Our course closely follows the standard 72 hour format developed by Bill Mollison and others. We take field trips to working Permaculture sites around Tucson\, and you will have the chance throughout the course to design and begin implementing Permaculture on a site of your choosing. This course is challenging and fun\, and it shows the whole big picture of sustainable design in Southwest Drylands and how sustainability and integrated design really work! Site: The classroom will be in the Central Tucson area\, and at other Permaculture sites in the Tucson area. Much of the class is held outdoors. Who has taken our design course in the last three years?: homeowners\, renters\, architects\, landscape architects\, engineers\, neighborhood activists\, landscape professionals\, retirees\, ranchers\, farmers\, government officials\, non-profit employees\, and people like you - all interested in designing and practicing sustainability at the level where they have influence - for a healthy future for all. The course is taught and facilitated by Dan Dorsey\, Brad Lancaster\, Barbara Rose\, and other teachers from the Sonoran Permaculture Guild\, as well as many other professional guest teachers. Our full teachers have at least two decades of Permaculture experience each. For teacher profiles see the Teaching-Team- Members link on this website. To register and for more information contact Dan Dorsey\, course registrar\, at 520-624-8030 or dorsey@dakotacom.net For the last twelve years this course has been full with a waiting list\, so early registration is encouraged. To give a high quality educational experience\, we limit the size of the class to eighteen participants. Contact Dan at dorsey@dakotacom.net or 520-624-8030 to register or receive more information about the course. The classes will be taught over five weekends in February and March 2012 – Feb. 4th and 5th\, Feb. 11th and 12th\, Feb. 25th and 26th\, Mar. 10th and 11th\, Mar. 17th and 18th. The cost will be $695\, or $650 for early registration before December 1st. There is also a class book fee of $39 for a copy of Introduction to Permaculture by Bill Mollison. Also highly recommended is Brad Lancaster’s Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands Vol 1 and Vol 2.

SUMMARY:FARMAGEDDON: The Unseen War on American Family Farms
DESCRIPTION:Opening night screening on Friday\, Sept. 16th at 7:00 p.m. co-presented by THE COMMUNITY FOOD BANK OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA\, featuring a "Farmer's Network" (with local farmers and community food groups on hand to provide information on eating and buying locally) on the Loft patio before the movie. The Farmer's Network starts at approximately 6:00 p.m. Regular admission prices. From Friday\, September 16th through Thursday\, September 22nd\, The Loft will be collecting canned food donations for the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. September is "Hunger Action Month\," so come see a great film and help bring food to those in need in our community at this special CANNED FILM FESTIVAL at The Loft! "An eye-popping wake-up call." - Kevin Thomas\, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES "Surprisingly engrossing ... FARMAGEDDON peddles food for thought." - Stephanie Merry\, THE WASHINGTON POST "Compelling ... an informal sequel to the hit documentary FOOD\, INC." - Andrew O'Hehir\, SALON.COM Americans’ right to access fresh\, healthy foods of their choice is under attack. FARMAGEDDON tells the story of small\, family farms that were providing safe\, healthy foods to their communities and were forced to stop\, sometimes through violent action\, by agents of misguided government bureaucracies. Filmmaker Kristin Canty’s quest to find healthy food for her four children turned into an eye-opening journey to discover why access to these foods was being threatened. What she found were policies that favor agribusiness and factory farms over small family-operated farms selling fresh foods to their communities. Instead of focusing on the source of food safety problems — most often the industrial food chain — policymakers and regulators implement and enforce solutions that target and often drive out of business small farms that have proven themselves more than capable of producing safe\, healthy food\, but buckle under the crushing weight of government regulations and excessive enforcement actions. FARMAGEDDON highlights the urgency of food freedom\, encouraging farmers and consumers alike to take action to preserve individuals’ rights to access food of their choice and farmers’ rights to produce these foods safely and free from unreasonably burdensome regulations. The film serves to put policymakers and regulators on notice that there is a growing movement of people aware that their freedom to choose the foods they want is in danger\, a movement that is taking action with its dollars and its voting power to protect and preserve the dwindling number of family farms that are struggling to survive.
