Solar Collector

Flat plate collectors are the simplest and most common type of collector designed to provide 30 years of dependable service and backed by a 10-year manufacturer warranty. They come in various sizes (e.g. 4’X8’, 4’X10’),  are thin (e.g. 3-4 inches), black to absorb heat, and covered with glass to prevent the heat from escaping. Collectors consist of copper tubes that use either distilled water or a glycol mixture as a heat transfer fluid. This fluid is pumped into the collector’s pipes where it is heated by the sun and then moved out of the collector.

Solar Water Tank

A solar water tank is an insulated water storage tank where cold water enters and solar heated water exits. Cold water enters the solar tank, and is heated by a coil of pipe containing the heat transfer fluid (e.g. distilled water or a glycol mixture) that circulates through the collectors. After the heat has been transferred, the heat transfer fluid is then pumped back up to the collector to start the process again.
